“How many times have I told you? Stop destroying yourself in the name of love. You and I can never be together.”
“Why?” she asked, her voice trembling but stubborn. “Why can’t we be together? Weren’t you the one who said love defeats everything?”
He looked away.
“I don’t care who you are,” she continued, stepping closer. “You are in my heart now. And my heart… burns for you.”
“But I don’t belong to you, Vanessa!” His voice rose, sharper than he intended. “If anyone sees us like this, you’ll be banished. You’ll be humiliated in front of everyone.”
“I don’t care,” she said softly. “I only care about you.”
There was a pause.
A dangerous one.
“Are you ready to do anything for me?” he asked.
She didn’t hesitate. “Absolutely. Anything.”
“Even if it’s impossible?”
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes for a second, like he was fighting something inside himself.
Then, quietly—
“Then for my sake… stop loving me.”
For a moment, everything went silent.
Deafening silence until…
“Vanessa…?” His voice was no longer firm. It cracked.
She smiled.
“My last wish…” she said, her eyes softer than before, “even if you love someone else… just don’t forget me.”
“Vanessa—wait, what are you doing? I didn’t mean it like that—”
“VANESSA!”
In the present—
Vaani’s POV—
“Vaani?”
I opened my eyes suddenly.
My heart was racing like I had just run a marathon. My hands felt cold, and for a second, I couldn’t even breathe properly.
“Yes… maa?”
“What happened?” my mother asked, slightly worried. “You kept shouting in your sleep. You looked so anxious.”
“Nothing… I think I just had a bad dream.”
“We don’t have time for that now,” she said, already turning away. “Get ready quickly or we’ll be late for the temple. And don’t think too much about it, okay? It’s probably nothing.”
“Okay, maa.”
Maybe it is only….just a dream?
We left early, around seven, so we skipped breakfast. The plan was to come back by nine or ten and eat then.
The morning air was cool, and everything felt normal.
Too normal.
As we reached near the temple, something felt… off.
“Have we been here before?” I asked.
“Yes,” my mother said casually. “Once, when you were little.”
“Oh… that’s why it feels so …familiar.”
“You used to love this place,” she smiled. “See that tower near the river? You would always ask me to lift you up so you could see the water shining in the sunlight.”
I looked at it.
And for some reason, I didn’t feel happy.
Then I saw the cliff. The same one from the dream, the same through which…Vanessa fell.
No Vaani,it’s probably just a random cliff near the riverside. But if it was random, then why did I pull myself back as if I was about to jump?
